Flashback - Christian Cult of...

It sometimes surprises me that I've been whinging in this space - sorry, blogging  for over six years now. I started after (then!) New Word Alive in 2010, and haven't really stopped. The golden period, I think, was between 2012 and 2014, but I did write (in my opinion, at least) the odd good thing before and after that. Today I'm sharing a bit of a flashback - to draw attention of newer friends and readers to some posts that I think have aged reasonably well. Back in 2011 I wrote four posts in what I grandly called that 'Christian Cult of' series. These explored a few things, very good things, which I felt (and still feel!) can take the focus off of Jesus. I remember Pete Greig's great talk at the closing of HTB's Focus 2014 emphasising and exhorting us to focus on Jesus. But I digress. (But do watch the talk).

The first post looked at worship leaders, and asks a question I think is still, and perhaps increasingly, important for Christians to ask. As ever, it is fascinating to see how one changes - and I'm glad the comments on this post are from people who I'm still friends with, and that I can change my mind about things, like Soul Survivor/Momentum!

The second post considered preachers, a vital part of the ministry of the Church, and one that can easily be idolised whatever flavour of the Body of Christ you are part of. It is quite funny that I mentioned Keller and Piper as my favourites - possibly, though now I'd add Ponsonby, Mumford, Nathan, Welby, Kandiah and others!

The third post considered the Bible. I've since discovered that there is definitely such a thing as 'bibliolatry', and that it is dangerous. We do need to be ever aware of replacing the Holy Spirit with the holy scriptures, and remind ourselves that the Bible exists to point us ever towards Jesus.

The fourth and final post considered world mission. I've since thought a lot deeper about mission - with my MA focusing on 'Mission and Ministry', officially, and working with Graham Kings, the Mission Theologian in the Anglican Communion. Regardless, it is interesting to see what I thought back then - and I don't entirely disagree now!

This little blog post has been quite self-reflective - I've enjoyed looking back. But I hope it has also been interesting, whether you know me or not, and whether you've been reading my stuff for years or this is your first time.

I hope it doesn't put you of...

See you on the interwebs.
