Everything in Colour

Isn't this a good album cover? I like it. As a patriot, I like it because its a nice shot of London. As a dreamer, I like it because of the colours and the floating balloon man. As a wannabe hipster, I like the fact its basically an Instagram photo. More though, I like it because its a brilliant album cover to a solid new album with a brilliant title track.

Whether or not the man under the balloons is actually Ben Cantelon, thrown by Tim Hughes and the other jokers at Worship Central, is open to speculation.

"Everything in Colour" is a great album. If you like Ben Cantelon's style, or modern worship, or the Worship Central sound, then its worth buying. That's probably enough review for most people.

The title track of this album, for me, is the big draw. Whilst being quite a relaxed song in style, 'Everything in Colour' NAILS a central truth of the Christian life: Life with Jesus is better. Using the metaphor of colour, with a constant refrain of "The world comes alive, you have opened my eyes, everything I see is in colour", this is one of my new favourite worship songs. To me - and this may be just a personal thing - it echoes John 10:10 with how a life with Jesus opens our life up. This is a song about the joyful reality that is the Christian life - "life coloured by your love". It's a solid, upbeat song about one of the often-unsung realities of the Christian life.

There are a number of songs on this album that have been around for a while, but as a set it works, and as an album, in my opinion, it hangs together nicely. Some of these standbys/old favourites are "New Day", the barnstorming "Saviour of the World" and "Love Came Down". There are a variety of other new songs as well, but I just want to highlight a couple of them in this review.

"Guardian" is a brilliant song. I like it. It's great to sing (as I have done in the shower several times), "you go before me, your'e there beside me, and if I wander, love will find me" - a reassuring anthemic refrain that has a great beat to bounce it along. Brilliant shower worship here - but with a challenging few lines about being obedient that make this a thinking worshippers song. It's good to be reminded that, regarding God, his "promises will stand forever, your my defender". I'm a big fan of this song.

"My Deliver" is a song with a title reflecting one of the chief qualities of Jesus, that is not often put in song. The standout line for me is again reassuring, and in the refrain; "I am safe, in the arms of the father, I'm safe in the arms of the father, I'm resting in your embrace, I know your love will never fade". There are a number of songs flying around at the moment about the permanent faithfulness of God's love - which the worshipping Calvinist in me loves, and my inner human being is very grateful for. I like the music of this song too, but thats an aside.

Overall, "Everything in Colour" is one of my favourite new worship albums. Slightly less studio-y than some recent offerings, with some great lyrics and decent variety, I'd recommend this, as I said at the start, to most people. The title track should definitely be downloaded - if you don't fancy the whole album.
