This post comprises the fifth consecutive week of my 'Tuesday Prayer' series, where each week I try and share a quote or thought from my reading on the topic that I've found particularly helpful or challenging. This week, following quotes from Tom Wright, John Wimber, Richard Foster and Don Carson, and the great J. C. Ryle, it is the turn of theologian Alister McGrath.
He writes this, in his helpful An Introduction to Christian Spirituality, and echoes something that Pete and I are aiming for in our book, and something we have found to be very true;
“Christianity is not just a set of ideas; it is a way of life. Part of that life is a richly structured yearly pattern of life, in which various aspects of the Christian faith are singled out for particular attention during the course of a year”
To me, that is absolutely true, and I am rediscovering the traditional church calender as a way of helpfully focusing myself and my faith at certain times. I'm wary of being legalistic about it, but McGraths understanding - 'it is a way of life', echoes the truth behind the tradition.
But what do you think? Do you agree? How would you phrase it? Let me know in the comments.
