The songs in question are by one Olly Knight - I guy I've learned a bit about through Twitter. He self-describes as a freelance musician and photographer - and you can find his photography website here. The other influence on these songs is UCCF Head of Theology Mike Reeves, who's written some great books, most recently 'The Good God'. This collaboration has led to two great songs; "The Fathers Love" and "Fountain of Goodness", both available as singles on iTunes.
The Fathers Love is the first one I listened to, and I loved it. Its a fast pace, lyrically rich and passionate song about the Fatherhood of God, and the Father-like love that flows from that aspect of God's being, that person of the Godhead. Its a great song - aurally reminiscent of Worship Central and Ben Cantelon's recent offerings, in the upbeat contemporary style that I personally find very helpful. If I'm being cheeky, with its refrain 'he loves us', betwixt meaty verses, its like a really good version of "He Loves us, Oh How". But to say that slightly does both songs a disservice - "The Fathers Love" is a brilliant song about the Fatherly Love of God for us, his children.
Second up, at least in my hearing, is Fountain of Goodness. The opening style is slightly different, but the overall musical tone is very similar; Olly is known for leading worship at student events, and this sort of music is the norm! You can find the Chords and lyrics here (thanks Dave Bish!), and as you can see, again, this is a lyrically rich and meaty song. What I like - and I hope we will see in churches - is that this song is both intimate in terms of the vertical element of worship, and also robust and uplifting. This is a song about the eternally-giving, powerful goodness of God's love and nature. This is a good thing to be singing about!
I'm looking forward to hearing more from Olly (and Mike?), as I think its a collaboration that has spawned two great songs. Recommended!
