Nadarkhani is Free!

I was happy to come home from a weekend meeting with people and Jesus - the first event of the Discipleship Year I'm on - to some great news:

Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani has been freed!

I was alerted to this Huffington Post Story by Rick Warren's Tweet, and am grateful to God for answering the prayers of hundreds of thousands of people. Given that this will not be a story much reported in the secular media, I thought I should share it here. This picture allegedly shows Nadarkhani and his family, post-release:

If you don't know what I'm on about, then check out my earlier post, "#Nadarkhani", where I shared the need to pray, the injustice of the situation, and what was going on. In doing some research into this story, I was challenged by it, and so shortly after I wrote a post entitled "The Challenge of Nadarkhani". His story can be an inspiration - but we in the West should let it be a challenge.

In closing, too, I would add that there is a double meaning in the title of this post. If the news reports are true, then Nadarkhani is free from an earthly prison. But, in being a follower of Jesus, a faithful Christian, then by Grace alone he is free from a prison far worse. Nadarkhani has been set free - by Jesus' death on the Cross - from a prison so totally consuming that it chains every part of us. I'm talking about sin, that thing which separates us from God. If you wan't to read more about sin, then read this post. But today I'm writing about freedom. Freedom in truth.

Jesus said:
"You will know the truth, and the truth
will set you free"

Jesus offers freedom from a prison none of us can escape by earthly means. Jesus freed Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani, he freed me, from the prison of sin. Rejoice with me - and millions of others - today that Nadarkhani is out of prison. But please, consider - even again - the truth of the Resurrection of Jesus, this truth, this Good News that can and will set you free.
