BBC's Creation: The Interview

I'm pretty excited to be sharing this with you today! As most people know, there is an ongoing discussion surrounding the origins of the universe. In one corner, science, in the other faith. This of course is totally inaccurate, and as with most issues there is a real scale of understanding and perspective on this issue. For example, I am a Christian who believes in the Inerrancy of Scripture, and that God created the world, but I think that the theory of evolution may well be a useful way for understanding how. The Book of Genesis, in my mind, is an amazing part of the Bible, telling us the fundamental truths of creation - rather than being a scientific document.

With that in mind, I present to you an interview. With my friend, the cousin of my wonderful fiancee, Sam Lucas. Sam can be found on Twitter, and has a blog/website here too!

(For simplicities sake the questions will be asked by Admiral Creedy (AC) in blue...)

Sam showing off necessary credentials - he's human.

AC: Who are you?

My name is Sam, I'm 20 and I'm from Manchester. I'm currently a car design student in my second year at Coventry University. I also listen to, write about and play a lot of music, do some freelance design stuff and I'm the president of the CU at Coventry University at the moment.

AC: What do you believe?

I'm a Christian, so I believe that Jesus died on the cross and beat death so that we could all live freely through God's incredible grace and love for us. I guess if I were to categorise myself, I'm a reformist conservative Christian, so I believe that the Bible is the true, complete and final word of God and that we should always maintain it's authority in our teaching and understanding of God and His creation.

AC: What are you doing with tv?

Long story short, I've been asked to take part in a documentary for BBC Three about creationism. The show will be set in the deep south of the USA, taking five evolution-doubters and Andrew Maxwell, the presenter, to look at evidence for and against the evolution theory.

The show aims to debate whether the evolution theory is true or not, and how it affects those who are 'religious' or otherwise.

AC: What are you trying to do through it?

I won't pretend that I'm incredibly knowledgeable about what I really think about the interpretation of the creation story in Genesis. What I am convinced of, however, is that God's creation is amazing, and as such I'm not convinced by the theory of evolution. More importantly, however, I want to show that it isn't a good reason to refute or discount Christianity. Many faithful Christians are believers in evolution, and many others are not, so I would consider it to be a secondary issue. As such, I want to hopefully show that it isn't 'Religion vs Science', and instead show that really Jesus is the fundamental reason for believing.

AC: When/where is it?

I'm flying out to the US on Tuesday 17th for ten days in the deep south! Obviously, visiting a region with some expected religious stereotypes plays into the hands of what they want to portray on the show, but it should be interesting and I'm expecting to hear some weird and wonderful things from both sides of the argument!

The production company is seriously disorganised, so right now I actually have no idea where I'm flying from, let alone exactly where I'll be going on the trip! I have no idea when the show will air either; I should imagine it will take a while to reach your television screens.

AC: What can those of us that pray,  pray for?

There are lots and lots of things, but here are the three most important;

1. That God would work through me, and that people would see Jesus in me. I really don't want this to be about making myself look clever or knowledgeable; instead I really hope that the show will challenge people's misconceptions and doubts about Christianity and the Bible.

2. That I would have opportunities to share the gospel. The four other people going on the trip as evolution sceptics are unlikely to all be Christians, based on what I've been told by the production company. There will also be a filming crew, various staff and of course the presenter, Andrew Maxwell. I'll be spending ten days around these people, so do pray that God would work through that and give me an opportunity to present people with the Gospel and that the Holy Spirit would soften their hearts.

3. That I will be loving and responsible. This isn't a super in depth scientific show, rather it's an hour of entertainment for BBC3 that will probably be watched mostly by young people. I will be under scrutiny and what I say could easily be twisted and changed. Do pray that I will know when to hold my tongue, and be as loving as possible to the people I'm with, even when it gets really difficult!
